2025 Theme: Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development
As the world prepares for the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025, the International Day of Families (IDF) will spotlight the pivotal role of family-oriented policies in advancing sustainable development. Held under the theme “Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development”, the event will highlight key insights from national and regional initiatives, emphasizing the role of families in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Family Policies and the Second World Summit for Social Development
The Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar (4-6 November 2025) presents a crucial opportunity to strengthen commitments to poverty eradication, decent work, and social inclusion. The Summit builds on the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration, which recognized families as the foundation of society and underscored the need for work-family balance and equal partnerships within households.
The IDF 2025 observance will emphasize the importance of integrating family-focused policies into national development agendas to address megatrends such as technological transformation, demographic shifts, urbanization, migration, and climate change.

The theme of the 2024 International Day of Families will focus this year on ‘Families & Climate Change: International Year of the Family + 30’.
The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action. Climate change negatively affects family health and wellbeing through increased pollution, extreme weather events that displace people, disruptions to agriculture and food systems, and economic impacts. Families contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions through electricity usage, transportation choices, food consumption, and overall consumption patterns. Ambitious climate action is urgently needed by governments, businesses, and citizens to cut emissions and advance climate justice.
Empowering families through education, changing consumption habits, and advocacy is critical for meaningful and effective climate action. Families pass values across generations, so instilling sustainable habits and climate awareness in families from an early age is important. Integrating circular economy principles into early childhood education can help build a sustainable economic model based on minimizing waste and regenerating natural resources. Families as consumers and advocates can drive the transition to a circular economy.
2023 Theme: Demographic Trends and Families(UN原文)
In late 2022, the world’s population has reached eight billion people. Characterised by the United Nations Secretary-General as a ‘milestone in human development’ this landmark event illustrates major advancements in health extending human lifespans. Population growth is to continue albeit at a decreasing rate. It is projected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 in 2100 rising concerns about the prospects of sustainable urbanization and management of climate change.
Demographic change is one of the most important megatrends impacting our world and the life and well-being of families worldwide. Demographic trends are mostly shaped by fertility and mortality patterns. Declining fertility rates result in benefits for families as they are more able to invest in their children’s health and education which in turns helps with poverty reduction and better socio-economic development.
Research indicates that decreasing fertility also increases women’s labour participation. On the other hand, fertility declines results in smaller families which are less likely to cope with care and other household obligations. As such in time of unemployment or illness, families have fewer members to rely on. Moreover, low fertility rates may undermine labour forces and social structures triggering drastic responses with hard to predict consequences for issues raging from social security to gender equality.
The 2023 International Day of Families observance is to raise awareness of the impact of demographic trends on families. The event will include:
- Launch of the Background Paper on “The Impact of Demographic Trends on Families”
- Presentation of the World Social Report 2023 “Leaving No One Behind in an Ageing World”
- Presentation on intergenerational equity and solidarity
- An overview of recommendations of policies in response to demographic trends Presentation of civil society initiatives for IYF+30
- Interactive discussion with audience participation
